Pandora Founder: "RIAA will kill online radio"

I got an email from Tim Westergren, the founder of Pandora. He is alarmed by the RIAA's latest tactic:

The Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) has recently released a revised fee schedule for internet radio. Left unchanged, these rates will end internet radio, period. The RIAA has effectively convinced this federal committee to establish rates that make online radio a non-viable business.

It's an utterly ridiculous ruling that renders any form of internet radio non-economic. We are continuing in the belief that sanity will return as everyone involved, including the 50 million avid online radio listeners, realize just how outrageous this is.

It sounds like Pandora is not taking this lying down.  Tim just sent me this message:

"Thanks very much, Michael.  Really appreciate your helping spread the
word.

The response from listeners has been quite overwhelming.
It really means a lot to us that people are willing to take the time to help
out.

In the next couple months we plan to introduce
legislation to fix this problem once and for all. We'll keep you posted on the
progress.

In the end, it's the collective pressure of constituents
on their representatives that will be the key to this.

Thanks again for your support."

Looks like they've been shut down in Canada.  Its kind of silly though.  People will no doubt use proxy servers to access the site if they really want.
