250,000 Empty Bottles = One Man's Floating Mexican Island Paradise [PICS] by randymac

My friend Richie Sowa of Spiral Island fame is busy again.

This time he is building a better stronger Spiral Island just off Isla Mujeres, Mexico.

Crowd Powered media affect: Today, I logged into SpiralIslanders.com a new social network site I recently set up for my good friend Richie Sowa, an artist, musician and expatriate of Britain.

I watched the mber number climb in 15 minutes and was a little puzzled but not surprised, as his story always attracts people to the site. But what story was driving traffic and what crowd powered site had picked up this story? Was it NowPublic, Digg, or some other major news source?

I immediately noticed that the site member count had doubled in 5 hours (now quadrupled) and I knew that some crowd powered media site had featured a story on Richie Sowa and his new Spiral Island.

I checked out some sources, and sure enough I found that a story was written up on www.ecoble.com and that it had been dugg by over 3,000 thousand Diggers at Digg.com.

If you can’t afford to buy your own tropical island paradise, why not build your own? Spiral Island, a floating island made up of over 25,000 plastic bottles was destroyed in 2005 by a hurricane, and this  floating wonder sported a two-story house, solar oven, self-composting toilet and multiple beaches.

Spiral Island is also his vision for low-impact sustainable living. The next version of the island is being built to withstand more treacherous weather than the first and is located just off Isla Mujures, Mexico near Cancun, in a more sheltered part of Mexico’s waters.

Since I am a member of NowPublic.com and enjoy this site for it's crowd powered news, I thought I would add this story link here about Richie Sowa's new Spiral Island to help spread his story.

If you can’t afford to buy your own tropical island paradise, why
not build your own? The original (now destroyed) Spiral Island sported
a two-story house, solar oven, self-composting toilet and multiple
beaches. What now? Its creator is building a new recycled island
paradise that he plans to float out to sea and travel around the world
on!
