My friend Richie Sowa of Spiral Island fame is busy again.

This time he is building a better stronger Spiral Island just off Isla Mujeres, Mexico.

Crowd Powered media affect: Today, I logged into www.SpiralIslanders.com a new site I recently set up for my good friend Richie Sowa, an artist, musician and expatriate of Britain so his friends and other Spiral Islanders could meet up to discuss his new island and the history of his floating adventure.

I watched the site new member count climb up in 15 minutes and was a little puzzled but not surprised, as Richie's story about his floating island in Mexico always attracts people to the site.

But what story was driving traffic and what crowd powered site had picked up this story? Was it featured on NowPublic, Digg, or some other major news source? After 20 minutes updating the site I noticed the new member count had climbed over 120 members (now over 170 members), which was amazing, as this new site is still in early development and will not be officially announced until December 10th, 2007.

I had planned to announce a new story about Richie Sowa and his new island on NowPublic, but this most recent story has given the crowd powered media numbers the scoop. I will post my new story on Richie Sowa and his new Spiral Island on or about December 10th, 2007 on NowPublic.

At 7:00 PST I have noticed that the site member count has tripled in the past 5 hours and I knew that some crowd powered media site had featured a story on Richie Sowa and his new Spiral Island.

I checked out some sources, and sure enough I found that a story was written up on www.ecoble.com and that it had been dugg by over 3,200 Diggers at Digg.com.

This evening I have received 4 requests from news reporters around the
world for more information on how to reach Richie Sowa to feature him
and his new Spiral Island in this news sites and newspapers. The most
recent request is from NewZealand.

If you can’t afford to buy your own tropical island paradise, why not build your own? Spiral Island, a floating island made up of over 25,000 plastic bottles was destroyed in 2005 by a hurricane, and this  floating wonder sported a two-story house, solar oven, self-composting toilet and multiple beaches.

Spiral Island is also his vision for low-impact sustainable living. The next version of the island is being built to withstand more treacherous weather than the first and is located just off Isla Mujures, Mexico near Cancun, in a more sheltered part of Mexico’s waters.

Since I am a member of NowPublic.com and enjoy this site for it's crowd powered news, I thought I would add this story link from ecoble..com about Richie Sowa's new Spiral Island to help spread his story.

If you can’t afford to buy your own tropical island paradise, why
not build your own? The original (now destroyed) Spiral Island sported
a two-story house, solar oven, self-composting toilet and multiple
beaches. What now? Its creator is building a new recycled island
paradise that he plans to float out to sea and travel around the world
on!
