Physical immortality is not possible, however for those who have mastered certain natural and mental laws, living indefinitly, or as long as one chooses probably is.

You are quite right; any individual who has survived for
2,800 years would have the potential for immortality and he or she could rightly be referred as such.
Extreme human longevity has always fascinated me; therefore I have done some research on this subject. My information indicates that a person who is capable of achieving the kind of longevity we are talking about must have not only a profound understanding of natural law, especially mental laws and principles, but must also have absolute mastery of the laws as well whereby he or she can apply them perfectly in their daily lives. The ancient Rosicrucians called this the mastery of life. This would require a dynamic mental effort,in effect the creation of a different mental reality where among other things the belief in death does not exist. In your contacts with the long-lived persons that you have met, I am curious if proper mental focus was discussed as a method to help in achieving longevity.

Using the higher laws to overcome the lower laws is precisely what I meant, the lower laws being the natural laws that govern the material universe and man's being as well. The lower is subject to decay and dissolution. The higher laws being mental or sprititual in nature are eternal and as such are not subject to dissolution and decay and can therefore be used to negate that which is lower.
Mastery consists not in abnormal dreams, visions and fantastic imagining or living, but in using the higher forces against the lower--escaping the pain of the lower planes by vibrating on the higher. "Transmutation not presumptuous denial is the weapon of the master"
the Kybalion.
This refers to a mental transformation whereby the mind experiences an exalted state of awareness and precieves things from a cosmic viewpoint, where infinite existence is not a belief but an absolute reality. This requires the full use of the intuitive mind for this vast cosmic mental realm is beyond reach of the intellect and reason alone.

Is not living as long as one chooses to live, physical immortality?

Is not living past 250 years, past 500 years, or even 3,000 years physcial immortality?

And what about the cells that are kept indefintiely in a petri dish?  Have they not achieved some sort of physcial immortality?

Sorry I took so long to respond.
Webster defines immortality as unending existence, my personal difinition would be unending conscious life, never to die.
This would of course require a physical body that was indestructible, so if a person should exist for hundreds or even thousands of years and then pass away, this could not properly be called immortality.
Indifinite[meaning not precise or having no exact limits] certainly could be interpreted as meaning immortality.
There are many references to the possibility of physical immortality in the writings of the ancient sages and seers.

Hermes Trismegistus. the Divine Pymander.
77.
Why O men of earth have you delivered yourself over onto death having the power to partake of immortality? Repent and change your minds, that you have walked in error, and been darkened in ignorance.
78.
Depart from that dark light be partakers in immortality.
Your story is fascinating, I would like a copy of your book when it is published.

The immortals I have met appear to me to be "spiritually indestructible" as oppose to "physically indestructible".  That is they are "protected" by means not easily apparent, but clearly they have avoided certain death many times in their life; hence my claim that they are "immortal".

So while their immortality does not quite match the formal definitions of immortality, clearly surviving 2,800 years makes one pretty much beyond lucky.

Yes!

"This would require a dynamic mental effort,in effect the creation of a different mental reality where among other things the belief in death does not exist"

You are on to something!

Enjoy the aha moment!

Longevity is a fascinating topic, which I, too, have an interest in studying. I believe that William Salyers has expressed a profound principle--the true secret of longevity, "... the creation of a different mental reality where among other things the belief in death does not exist." Many of us care for our bodies, socialize, avoid stress and do all the things science recommends to live a long healthy life. If it were that easy, there would be many immortals. As indicated in Salyers' prior post, a profound understanding and application of natural law especially mental laws are needed. I think this goes well beyond positive thinking. In the Kybalion, an incredible book by the Three Initiates explaining many natural laws, it states that, "One may use the laws of the higher to overcome the laws of the lower." Do you think this would apply to the principle of longevity in reference to the mental laws?

By the way, William Salyers, could you possibly be the well-known Appalachian artist?

Thank you, William! What an incredibly interesting explanation. So, are you are saying by practicing the mental laws to perfection, these laws will have an effect upon our bodies thus bringing perfect health? One would experience this higher mental realm, an exalted state of awareness, and truly know or mentally see things as they really are. This understanding would allow one to put into practice the higher mental laws and greatly improve the health of the body extending its existence possibly indefinitely. This would be an example of using the higher mental laws to overcome the lower physical laws of decay and death. Every cell in the human body would then vibrate at a higher rate bringing about perfect health and longevity. It cannot be just a belief in the higher laws; but one has to make them a part of whom he or she is, and live them.

I have always felt that experiencing nature by spending much time there is absolutely essential to begin to experience and learn these mental laws. Sometimes nature helps me realize for a moment that in actuality death is only a state of mind. It is an experience; but it is a fleeting thing. No doubt, I have much more understanding to acquire before I can truly can let go of my belief in death that is so prevalent in our society. You alluded to this in a prior post when you said, “This would require a dynamic mental effort, in effect the creation of a different mental reality where among other things the belief in death does not exist.”

I noticed that you did not answer my question about whether you are an artist. I apologize if I offended you by being too personal; but I own an older piece of art by a William Salyers. It is an ink drawing of the Appalachian countryside. I was just curious.

P.S. I had to change my name this time to get the blog to accept the post.  This has happened to be twice now.  A Spam filter blocks it.

When man's mind, through lack of understanding identifies with material reality his body is then subject to the laws of entrophy and decay and eventually he will grow old and pass away. But when by much effort and sacrifice he achieves a profound transmutation of his mental faculties, the immortal principle then permeates his consciousness and thereby his entire being. When this occurs every cell, every tissue, and every organ in the body is revitalized and regenerated. From this time onward the creative regenerative forces in the body function perfectly and with the passage of time the physical organism is molded to a greater and greater degree of perfection with little effort on the part of the individual.
Ann Smith, your comprenhension of these laws is very good so you have already made a quantum mental leap forward.I hope you continue your studies for true understanding is dawning within your field of awareness.
Yes I am an artist, but I only occasionally do a show nowadays. Ink is the medium I mainly work in; so I am sure you have a piece of art that I have done. I hope it brings you pleasure.
By the way,I am sure you understand that I am limited as to the information I may present in a public forum, however I hope this will be helpful to you and others as well.

William, your post is the most informative and enlightening information that I have read on longevity. I am very appreciative. Things are much clearer to me now. By identifying with the body, material reality as you mentioned, we are in fact shortening our life span. We are accepting death and disease. But, if we identify with the immaterial essence that some call the soul, this can lengthen our physical life and regenerate the body. This is how I interpreted your post; although, I realize it went much deeper.

On another note, I am thrilled that you are the artist that created the landscape that I now own! I will always treasure this artwork. And to know that you are interested in longevity too is fascinating! Nothing happens by chance.
