Bloggers are abuzz this week after photos of Pierce Brosnan's wife Keely Shaye Smith in a bikini hit the web on Thursday. Reminiscent of the nasty Internet furor over the Jennifer Love Hewitt bikini pictures splashed over the web in December, celebrity gossip sites and bloggers galore can't seem to help themselves from slamming anyone even semi-famous who isn't a six zero.
Pierce Brosnan, who starred in four James Bond films as agent 007, wed journalist Kelly Shaye Smith in 2001. Brosnan had been previously married to Australian actress Cassandra Harris for eleven years. Harris died of ovarian cancer in 1991. Ten years later, in August, 2001, Brosnan and Smith walked down the aisle in a fairy tale wedding at a historic Irish abbey. To those who witnessed the event, the couple were an obvious example of an extraordinary love.
“Before Keely walked down that aisle towards him, he was just being Pierce, interacting with the people he knew in the church,” said his mother May Carmichael, according to Hello Magazine. “But when he saw her standing there, he almost crumpled a little bit—you could just see what they mean to each other. It was a wonderful moment.”
That beautiful romance was tarnished a bit this week, however, when photos of the couple cavorting in the waves off the island of Kauai hit the web. The photos showed Brosnan, sporting a bit of love handles, playing at the beach with his wife and one of his sons. But it wasn't Brosnan's appearance that sparked bloggers across the Net to go wild—it was his wife's.
Smiling and wading through the waves, Keely Shaye Smith had the audacity to wear a bikini on her outing—even though she's not a size six or below! Gasp! The rude comments and nasty remarks flew from blog to blog over Smith's curvaceous form.
TMZ.com posted the photos with the label "Double Oh No!" and sarcastically remarked "Pierce Brosnan and his gorgeous wife, Keely Shaye Smith, had a whale of a time on the island of Kauai on Wednesday." BustedCoverage.com asked nastily if Smith had engaged in "too many late night double-stuffed pizzas." FListed.com actually semi-blasted other celebrity gossip sites for slamming Smith, but couldn't refrain from commenting that heavily overweight people can end up with "MANY health complications". And that's just the tip of the iceberg.
The whole debacle is reminiscent of the Internet furor in December over photos that surfaced of actress Jennifer Love Hewitt in a bikini. Comments on celebrity gossip sites abounded over Hewitt's curves. Unlike most celebrities blasted in the media for their appearance, Hewitt slammed right back, saying "like all women out there should, I love my body… being a size 0 doesn’t make you beautiful".
Perhaps Smith and Hewitt should start their own blog about the infantile obsession celebrity gossip mongers seem to have about the shape of a woman's body.
