Dennis Fritz, who wrote the book, "Journey Toward Justice", is named as a defendant in a libel lawsuit along with , John Grisham, author of "The Innocent Man", Robert Mayer, author of "The Dreams of Ada", and all their publishers, and New York City attorney Barry Scheck, Fritz's former lawyer who once represented Fritz and is co-director of The Innocence Project. With the aid of Barry Scheck and irrefutable DNA evidence, Dennis Fritz and Ron Williamson were exonerated in 1999.

Pontotoc County District Attorney Bill Peterson and Gary Rogers, a former agent for the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation filed the libel lawsuit.
The lawsuit, seeks at least $75,000 compensation and demands a jury trial. Peterson and Rogers were instrumental in the conviction of Ron Williamson and Dennis Fritz in the murder of Debbie Sue Carter in Ada, Oklahoma in 1982. The conviction was later overturned on DNA evidence pursued by the Innocence Project, which Scheck heads, Dennis Fritz was wrongfully convicted of a crime he did not commit and spent 12 years in prison. Part of the lawsuit claims the defendants conspired to commit libel against the plaintiffs, generate publicity for self interest by placing them in a false light and intentionally inflicting emotional distress upon them.

So... Prosecutor with the help of Gary Rogers sent 2 innocent men, Dennis Fritz and Ron Williamson to prison for 12 years. Both Innocent men freed by DNA evaluation of crime scene evidence. Innocent man, Dennis Fritz writes book about his experiences. Prosecutor and Gary Rogers sue the innocent man they wrongfully sent to prison and Prosecutor and Rogers sue for intentionally inflicting emotional distress upon them. Only in America Folks...Please view my blog, Barbara's Journey Toward Justice HERE for more information about Dennis Fritz or to leave comments.

I think Bill Peterson & the others who screwed up should admit they were wrong. Maybe they should spend 12 Years on Death Row or in Federal Prison to know what REAL Distress is like!! True Audacity & Arrogance!

Yeah, I know I am chiming in late here. I have read all 3 books and I have also experienced my own situation in which I got a dose of the reality of the intricate workings of our injust justice system. I am certain that the cops and the prosecutor believed they were incarcerating the right people. I think they just embellished their "facts" based on their gut feelings and that they couldn't pinpoint another suspect (although I wonder why Gore never came to mind). Anyway, I would have much more respect for Peterson if he would have ever admitted he was wrong and apologized. I can't believe that he remained DA after the truth came out.

William Peterson!! What an awful man. Knowingly doing all he did to get murder convictions and he is whining. There are others on death row who are innocent because of him. Perhaps he should be tried for murder with false evidence. I'm sure it's still easy to find another jail house snitch who has heard something.

Anyone who have right minds can tell his side of the story is full of garbage. And amazingly, people in Ada can believe what he says since he has been DA for a quite long time.  I was very surprised by B. Peterson, a devil himself can claim "emotional distress."

What a bunch of bullshit! Peterson should be honored to be recognized for a rotten cause! Everyone is so sue happy, so why not have a corrupt DA get some compensation for his so-called "emotional distress". That just pisses me the fuck off!

I sincerely believe that Bill Peterson should be on death row. At the minimum, disbarred and the target of another major civil lawsuit against him and those individuals within Ada law enforcement who knowingly targeted innocent individuals and illegally trampled upon their rights. Bill Peterson: you are an unremorseful, evil man whom I would imagine many will be happier upon your death. Those of you in law enforcement in the area who still engage in such activity: BEWARE; the public is watching you!

For all practical purposes, Bill Peterson murdered Ron Williamson. He destroyed years of Dennis Fritz life and subjected him to of the most horrible predicaments possible: to be recommended for capital punishment and subsequently sentenced to life in prison and for something of which he was innocent. Bill Peterson sent other innocents to prison including Tommy Ward and Karl Fontenot and apparently is content that they continue to suffer in incarceration.

Residents of Ada and Oklahoma should pressure their senators, congressmen, and govenor's office to conduct police internal affairs (with FBI involvement if possible) into the present and past connection of members of the police department and possibly district attorney's office with illegal drug trafficing. The link between the drug trafficing by Glen Gore and the Ada Police was mentioned in Grisham's The Innocent Man. It just might be continuing today particularly given the large cash flow generally assumed to exist in drug trafficing. John Grisham, Dennis Fritz, Robert Mayer, and the legal team responsible for the exhonoration of Williamson and Fritz should be commended for their perseverance, diligence, and call to duty for justice. It is furthurmore a disgrace that Tommy Ward and Karl Fontenot remain in jail. Residents of Oklahoma, you have a civil duty to pressure your public officials to reverse the dreadful injustice led by Bill Peterson which continues to punish two innocent people who remain incarcerated today. Public officials of Oklahoma and especially those of Pontotoc County and in particular Ada: Shame on You!!! Clean up your act and serve your constituents rather than terrorizing them!!!

The fact that Bill Peterson is suing Dennis Fritz for libel is inconceivable!  This man, apparently intentionally, conspired to put two innocent men in prison, one on death row.  He is evil and the fact the he remained D.A. after the convictions were overturned is outrageous.  No one on the prosecution side ever offered any apology to these two men.  Fortunately, Dennis Fritz has been able to rebuild his life and exercise his First Amendment Right and publish a book about his terrible experience.  Too bad, Ron Williamson is not so lucky and died shortly after his exoneration and Tommy Ward and Karl Fontenot are still in prison.

Bill Peterson is a horrible example of what used to be an honorable profession.  He should be disbarred and prosecuted!

Peterson is likely a sociopath.

Clearly his actions indicate he has no remorse for the evil sins he has commited against mankind, the judicial system, and the constition.

His judgement will one day come from God, and ultimately true justice will prevail.

I just finished reading The Innocent Man and my soul hurts. I checked the web on Bill Peterson and read the first page of his web site. He has a full page telling us about how his Father was a doctor, his Mother a housewife, what type of sports he likes etc. Does he actually expect intelligent people to read his bio and think, gosh what a great background, he's just got to be a good guy doing a good job. Unfortantely, that thinking is exactly what allowed him to corrupt his office in Ada.

again, I'm late on the bandwagon too, but I'm just wondering why there isn't some law that mandates that prosecutors who have prosecuted wrongly - where there is evidence that they have manipulated evidence to get a conviction - will automatically pay some kind of hefty fine or serve some time or something? that'll make them think twice about carrying out a crap investigation. I'm not saying to punish every prosecutor who makes mistakes - everybody does, that's how human judgement is - but we should have some kind of deterrent to stop prosecutors from being so arrogant in their judgement and would bend procedure and protocol just to uphold their egos.
