NP Rank:
The Homeless outside SFU Surrey
Living the student life at SFU is a great university experience and
the surrey campus has a great atmosphere. But when we walk out side the
safe campus to the gruesome streets of Whalley, all hell breaks
loose. Homless people and crack addicts swarm after you for your
bum change, and you are forced to surrender to their reeking body odor
and bad dental hygiene. In a state of confusion, students are willing
to just give all the change in their pockets to get these people
to leave them alone. It gets worst when students have to take public
transit because there is twice the amount of the hobo
population and the occaional crazy person who makes a
scene. A recent survey showed that 9 out of 10 students say that
surrey central has a homeless problem and a poverty issue. We as
students want to make this problem noticed and want it to be
solved. We dont come to our university to see homless people, we
are here to learn and interact with our fellow peers.
Its ironic how hobo's stand outside the SFU campus, not
working, not learning and not building a future for themselves. Yet
they ask for our change from young students who work hard, learn
lots, and 'try' to create a better future for themselves. I got to meet
one of these homeless people and asked him why he was begging for money
at surrey central. He replied "I never tried hard in school, and
I got addicted to drugs. I need money to satisfy my
addiction. Will you give me money now?". I then gave him a quater to
satisfy his need.
There is an undeniable problem at SFU Surrey with strange people
walking around our property. Many of my peers think that this is a
growing problem in our area. One article by Jiwansanghera discussed
this topic on her news article as well, referenced at http://www.nowpublic.com/life/homeless-life-surrey
