Ladysmith Lights a Candle Against the Darkness
Ladysmith, Vancouver Island, Canada
Ladysmith is a small town on the east coast of Vancouver Island. Like many of our small towns here, it is having to reinvent itself as industry and jobs change. First it was mining, then logging, the future is uncertain but in the meantime this small town pulls together at Christmas time to create a cheery fantasy during the dark nights.
Every year for the past 20, volunteers have worked together to create a lovely display of holiday lighting. They kick off the season with a big parade and a coordinated light up, inviting everyone to come and participate. Every year the displays and the crowds have grown. Cafes and stores remain open to welcome the visitors.
The lights and displays are pretty, but the real story here is the ongoing cooperation and volunteerism displayed by the people of this little town.

Barbara McPherson, you've convinced me you've done the work - it's authentic. I also think that you've been fair and thorough. I didn't get the sense that you were hiding your biases, or passing off other's work as your own. Or worse -- getting paid by those you cover -- so it's transparent and independent. I also think you deserve praise for being an eyewitness, and for your investigative efforts. Good stuff.
