Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco announced that Jena prosecutor Reed Walters will not appeal the Louisiana Supreme Court ruling that vacated Mychal Bell's conviction of aggravated second degree battery and a conspiracy charge on September 14, 2007, charges that had been brought in criminal, not juvenile, court.

The Louisiana Supreme Court had ruled:

"The defendant was not tried on an offense which could have subjected him to the jurisdiction of the criminal court."

Mychal Bell, one of the Jena 6, is at the center of controversy surrounding what many call an unequal distribution of the law, between Blacks and Whites in Jena.

He and five other youth were originally charged with attempted murder of a White youth, their sneakers named as the weapon. The youth was taken to the hospital and released, later attending a school function that evening.

A march and rally of support for the Jena 6 brought thousands to the town of Jena, Louisiana on September 20, 2007.

Strange when I find myself cheering for common sense...
