Over 1,000 migrants die to reach EU this year

Rome (ANTARA News) - More than 1,000 migrants have lost their lives trying to reach the European Union so far this year, an Italian monitoring group said Wednesday.

The group, Fortress Europe, said 1,096 migrants had died on their way to an EU country in 2007, including 99 in September alone, based on figures published in the European media.

"At least 10,335 migrants have lost their lives off the European coast since 1988," the group was quoted by AFP as saying in a statement. (*) end
