Athens (ANTARA News) - A young couple in love whose families refused
them to marry swallowed pesticide on the southern Mediterranean island
of Crete, causing the death of the man and putting the girl in a coma,
newspaper reports said.

The couple, both cousins, began their relationship this summer but
faced strong objections from relatives in their small mountainous
village near the town of Ierapetra, in south-eastern Crete.

An uncle, who had reportedly been warned about the planned double
suicide, found the 24-year-old man and his 17-year-old cousin, DPA
reporteds citing the Greek daily newspaper Kathimerini.

Both Greece's civil code and the Church of Greece allows the marriage between second cousins. (*) END
