The
North American pet food recall has many pet owners reconsidering what they feed their pets. The
challenge for dog and cat owners who are making their own pet food is knowing where to start and how to provide their pet a balanced meal.

Author Jamie
Young is offering dog owners a place to start with his new cookbook Grrrrowlicious Food for Hungry Dogs.

Young offers a one-stop
cookbook of affordable, easy-to-make dog food recipes, featuring a balance of:

  • Cooked food
  • Raw food
  • The classic carnivore diet
  • and the all important dog treats

The 100-Mile Diet asks readers to buy locally, The Omnivore's Dilemma asks readers to reconsider what it means to be able to eat anything, author Jamie Young asks us to "think outside the can" when it comes to our pets.

Considering the on-going and extensive recall of pet foods, now is
the time to think beyond the can of dog food or bag of kibble. As
Jamie Young says, "unless your dog is made in a factory, there's
nothing better than a fresh food diet."

Young knows from personal experience how difficult it is to get information on making your own pet food.  Young, who lives in Australia, developed Grrrrowlicious Food for Hungry Dogs and started his own online dog food cooking show, GRRRR TV, when he was unsuccessful at gaining a presence for fresh dog food on Australian food networks.

Until he started the project, he had no idea that all the vets on TV in Australia
were either sponsored or employed by the processed food industry. The
lack of widely available fresh pet food information inspired Young to
take matters into his own hands.

The result is a collection of easy and affordable recipes that are full of variety and flavour:

  • Fresh Cooked Sardines
  • Pasta Bolognese
  • Rabbit Stew
  • Doggy Biscuits
  • Cheese and Bacon Cookies

Grrrrowlicious Food for Hungry Dogs, first published in Australia, is now available in Canada and the US from Whitecap Books ($16.95 CDN / $14.95 USD). Jamie Young's website also offers more information and sample recipes.
