Point, Click ... Eavesdrop: How the FBI Wiretap Net Operates
The FBI has quietly built a sophisticated, point-and-click surveillance system that performs instant wiretaps on almost any communications device. ...The surveillance system, called DCSNet, for Digital Collection System Network, connects FBI wiretapping rooms to switches controlled by traditional land-line operators, internet-telephony providers and cellular companies. It is far more intricately woven into the nation's telecom infrastructure than observers suspected. ... FBI wiretapping rooms in field offices and undercover locations around the country are connected through a private, encrypted backbone that is separated from the internet. Sprint runs it on the government's behalf. ... FBI endpoints on DCSNet have swelled over the years, from 20 "central monitoring plants" at the program's inception, to 57 in 2005, according to undated pages in the released documents. By 2002, those endpoints connected to more than 350 switches.
Today, most carriers maintain their own central hub, called a "mediation switch," that's networked to all the individual switches owned by that carrier, according to the FBI. ... Privacy groups and security experts have protested CALEA design mandates from the start, but that didn't stop federal regulators from recently expanding the law's reach to force broadband internet service providers and some voice-over-internet companies, such as Vonage, to similarly retrofit their networks for government surveillance.

I hope these measures help U.S. officials thwart any terrorists attacks on America.

I'm sorry Gmony, but DCSNet has nothing to do with international terrorism. It's an outgrowth of domestic surveillance programs like Carnivore, Red Hook, Digital Storm, and the Total Information Awareness system, which keep getting renamed because their funding keeps getting cut off as soon as the public becomes aware of them.
This is about government agencies spying on citizens. We might like to think that systems like these will never be abused, but ...

COINTELPRO also did not protect us from terrorism... for the many who use the "you shouldn't worry if you've got nothing to hide" argument, I always ask how much money you make per year and what your favorite sexual position is with your spouse or partner. They never tell me.
My point is that, even if not breaking the law, there are things that you don't want to share with strangers, and things that strangers do not need to know.
Another issue here, beyond the argument of whether or not the government needs to listen to my calls in the first place, is checks and balances: we'd do well to remember that whatever power we give to those whose political values we agree with will, sooner rather than later, end up in the hands of those whose values we do not agree with.

your right Jordan thats why if they want to know when you take a sh*t nowadys they will know it. You can worry about it but if they want they will know how much money you make and things about your spouse you don't even know. The problem is instead of spooking the terrorists they are probably spooking on us. So yes i have nothing to hide because if they want it bad enough they will get it anyway.
