Toxic fake toothpaste that could have serious health consequences for anyone using it has been sold in markets and discount shops in the UK, the British medicines regulator has said.

The imitation tubes of Sensodyne have both Arabic and English writing on them.

The manufacturer of the legitimate product, GlaxoSmithKline, has said the fake toothpaste has high levels of the chemical Diethylene Glycol.

The chemical could be toxic to young children and anyone with impaired liver or kidney function.

In a statement the company said the fakes were illegal copies and had no connection with GlaxoSmithKline.
