NowPublic contributor Karoly Negyesi has come back from the old city in Budapest with news that there were violent confrontations between protesters and mounted police.

While other western news services have reported that all was quiet tonight, Karoly reports a more sinister situation developed early in the morning as police tried to clear a main square of all demonstrators.

Some of the demonstrators were clearly engaged in attacks on police and public property - these might have been "football holligans", Nazis, or perhaps other elements determined to destabilize the situation.
