Up to 50 people have been killed in Eldoret, western Kenya, when a mob torched a church Tuesday where hundreds had sought refuge after violence erupted over a disputed presidential election, the Associated Press reported.

The death toll from the riots has come to more than 275, it said.

Quoting a Red Cross volunteer, the AP said the church was attacked by a mob of about 2,000. The people killed were members of the Kikuyu, Kenya`s largest ethnic group from which President Mwai Kibaki comes.

Kibaki was reelected Sunday for a second five-year term, narrowly defeating his opposition challenger Raila Odinga. Opposition supporters have accused Kibaki of rigging election votes.

Since political disputes are often linked to ethnic conflicts in Kenya, it is feared that there may be more violence to come, Kyodo reported.
