Humans need a sense of superiority to at least one local ethnic group, if not economically or intellectually, then morally, or they self-destruct.

Theodore Roosevelt wrote in "The Strenuous Life" (1900): "It is only the warlike power of a civilized people that can give peace to the world." NYTimes' columnist Thomas Friedman in 1998 opined that the US should give war a chance. (Lately he has been calling the decisions to invade and occupy Iraq mistakes.) The neo-cons do not consider our adventures in Iraq or Vietnam to have been mistakes, and there is plenty of thirst for further wars in Iran and Pakistan. One is left wondering about an alleged ancient prophecy that the messiah will come only when a Jewish state (aided by enlisted supporters) defeats seven large Arab nations (Iran and Pakistan not included, of course). But I prefer the view that through many millennia of reincarnation, souls evolve toward peaceful coexistence, and that the United Nations' charter, in calling war a scourge, is an indication of some progress in the right direction.
