Africa, in particular, has been targeted to forever be a debtor nation unless they rise and begin the process of becoming a continent made up of leading manufacturing and trade nations.  Here to, many of the same nations which compose the Paris Club, through the activities of the European Union, have moved to enact trade agreements which effectively create barriers to free and open trade amongst African countries and western nations.  Thus, the difficulty of many of these nations to feed their people and sustain themselves.

LightN2Darkness, it's good stuff. There have been attempts at the G8 to cancel African debt and some progress has been made on that front. But the money-laundering in Africa from grants and from charitable organizations is of epidemic proportions. No wonder Africans feel they have no  choice but, to sell their children {e.g. Ivory Coast} to live.  The US funded World Bank, was to tackle corruption with a policy favoring countries you "can do busines with", but I am not sure their policy is as clear cut since the demise of Wolfowitz.

TAA,

Very astute and informative response, however, we must be willing to look a bit deeper.  Usually, the cancellation of debt as it pertains to African nations usually means either extinguishing an existing debt to be replaced by new debt @ different terms or the granting of an African nations resources (oil, telecom, electricy, banking etc....) in exchange for the cancellation of the debt (part of the original far reaching plan).

Who is really laundering the money in Africa?  Safe to say, maybe a few high level African governmental officials or party elite, but by and large, many of these countries are being utilized as a type of haven to launder money and all other corrupt activities.   Many of the excepted African leaders who have been placed in position of power or control by the west, expect these types of perks to exist as a type of quiet, private protocol of how things are done.  The willingness to except and particpate in this type of activity is very often a prerequiste to getting the job.  Those who would chose not to be party to this corruptness will not get the job and those who change direction in mid stream, after excepting the job, would be villafied by the western media(Mugabe), be subject to come up missing or mysterious find that they can not get out of the way of a stray bullet(Kabila Sr.),

The west plants and/or facilitates corruption in Africa.   Wolfowitz was a party man, carrying out the wishes of those for whom he worked.  His predesscer and successor are under the same working order.  This is a system, a particualr man, not withstanding.  This is why the system does and always will go along its way, no matter the man.  For the man's cooperation he gets a fat salary, per diem, access to pretty woman and all of the finer things that the world has to offer.  Wolfowitz, just got caught.  He temporarily lost what all men of his ilk must have and maintain at all times  ------ discretion!  :)

Good discussion, but the solution to rape by the IMF, World Bank and WTO can't be solved by still playing by a system that is based on exploitation.  Good story.

Indeed.  the solution to Africa's situation can not be solved by either IMF, World Bank or WTO solution.  Primarily because these groups, operating on behalf of their own countries and the countries of their trading partners, are at the root of the problem.

The wealth and sustinance of many nations have been and are built on the backs of Africa, the continent and its peoples.  Which makes more sense?  To provide $15 billion in subsidies or to build $15 billion in manufacturing and distrubtion capability?   One choice supports a nation until the next subsidy is required and the other supports and propels a nation and its people for generations!
