arming cute coeds.

I read this story today about a group of college students trying to get laws changed so they can carry concealed weapons on campus. The group, concealedcampus.org,
makes the point that most states allow concealed weapons nearly
everywhere but schools. And even when the states don’t prohibit
carrying weapons on campus the colleges usually prohibit the Second
Amendment on campus.

Furthermore, someone who is allowed to carry a concealed weapon has
proven that they want to follow the law and are more likely not to go
into the classroom and blow everyone away. Those who shoot up schools
are usually law breakers anyways (so they probably don’t have a license
to carry a concealed weapon) or they are psychologically off-kilter.

(From thoseshirts.com, a conservative t-shirt website.)

I personally think that people who have a permit to carry a
concealed weapon should be allowed to carry weapons onto campus. But I
have to admit that there is some misleading stuff coming out of our
side.

carry weapons on campus and prevent the next Virginia Tech.

Even if concealed weapons were allowed at places like Virginia Tech
there’s no guarantee it would have prevented the attack. The guy was
nuts and would have probably tried something anyway. Plus, there’s a
decent chance that no one in his vicinity would have been carrying a
gun to stop him. That’s as much as I’m willing to knock our side though.

Just because there are some minor holes in our position doesn’t mean
our side is wrong. Hardly. One of the worrying college students who is
opposed to bringing guns on campus had this to say:

Candace Soya, a 20-year-old student at TSU-San Marcos,
said she fears chaotic shootouts. If someone decided to open fire on
the tree-lined quad in the middle of her campus, armed students would
likely make matters worse, she said.

“It’s not a situation where you can fight fire with fire,” Soya said.

Really? Killing the crazed gunman wouldn’t work? We’re not combating some undead evil from a teen horror movie.

While it may not be a guarantee that someone with a gun would have
stopped the Virginia Tech massacre it’s completely idiotic to think
that guns are going to turn college campuses into the Wild West of
lore. As the article points out many people already have permits to
carry concealed weapons. Why isn’t there a shootout after every James
Bond movie?

Plus the knowledge that anyone could be possibly carrying a gun
would deter most would-be shooters from targeting such areas. Only in
areas of lawlessness, like the ‘hood, do we have nightly stories of
shootings. I live in a suburb surrounded by cops and there hasn’t been
a shootout here ever even though there’s a good chance someone is
carrying a gun at all times.

The people who follow the law and get permits aren’t going to pop a
cap in a moving car just because the guy is wearing the wrong colors.

Another point they make is that college kids drink a bunch of
alcohol and take drugs (I believe the article referred to it as
“experimenting”) and that could lead to a bad situation. A lot of
drinking done on college campuses are done at parties where guns could
already be without a carry permit. Even if we narrowed this down to
bars how often do you hear about a shootout at the local watering hole?
I’m sure people get shot at bars but you have to compare that number to
how many get killed drinking and driving. Or how about finding out how
many of those firearm killings involved someone with a permit. I would
guess it wouldn’t be a lot.

Opposition to allowing concealed weapons on campus (and anywhere for
that matter) stems from paranoia. From my own experience I know that
men and women who carry weapons are usually very responsible. They know
that what they’re carrying could kill someone and take extra care to
make sure that nothing bad ever happens. Allowing college students to
carry weapons on campus would create a culture of fear not only for
pansy gun control nuts but for anyone who wanted to do something stupid
on campus.
