Brazilian Congress accepts preliminary Venezuelan entry in Mercosur
21 November, 2007. Despite hot deliberative discussions, the Constitution and Justice committee of the National Congress of Brazil approved a report recommending the Venezuelan membership to MERCOSUR trade bloc. Along the legislatures of Argentina and Uruguay, this committe of the Brazil Congress recommended the application 44 to 17. But such recommendation has to be voted at two further plenary sessions by the end of the year. Venezuela's bid to enter MERCOSUR caused controversy after some Brazilian Congressmen criticised the cancellation of the RCTV broadcasting licence. Such comments angered President Chavez who backfired by calling them parrots of the American Empire; he then set a deadline for his application to be approved but such lapse has long been overdue. Congress of Paraguay has yet to discuss the Venezuelan membership application.
