As the Democratic primary continues with no clear front-runner, Hillary Clinton's campaign appears to be running out of the most important fuel of all in US politics: money.

As the Democratic presidential candidates hunkered down for a lengthy -- and costly -- war of attrition for the nomination, aides to Hillary Clinton revealed Wednesday that she dipped into her personal fortune last month to lend the campaign $5 million, signaling potential financial vulnerability for her bid.

Clinton staff members have also confirmed that they are now working without pay as the cash-strapped operation tries to compete with Barack Obama. Last week Senator Obama reported he had raised $US32 million in January, mainly from small donors, and was on track for $US30 million in February.
The numbers thrown around in the articles above really bring home what it takes to compete in a mass-media campaign.
