London (ANTARA News) - Pakistan`s President Pervez Musharraf held talks with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown Monday as more than 1,000 demonstrators staged a noisy protest outside Downing Street against his visit.

Musharraf, on a European tour ahead of elections in Pakistan next month, is expected to want to reassure Brown that the poll will be fair, free and peaceful.
The two leaders were also due to discuss the fight against terrorism and the safety of Pakistan`s nuclear weapons.
Brown was expected to pledge further help and equipment to fight terrorism.
As the Pakistani leader slipped into Downing Street, more than 1,000 demonstrators shouted slogans describing him as an "illegal President" and demanded the release of all political prisoners, lawyers and human rights campaigners held in Pakistan.
While most of the protestors were supporters of Benazir Bhutto, the assassinated leader of the opposition Pakistan People`s Party (PPP), there were also representatives from other parties and London-based opposition groups.
"We want release of lawyers and judges," and "Musharraf the killer" were among slogans shouted by the protestors.
Jemima Khan, the former wife of Pakistani opposition politician Imran Khan, was expected to hand over a petition to the British government on behalf of the protestors, DPA reported.(*) END
