General Petraeus' First Iraq Briefing

Even in terms of just decent behavior, it would have done Sen. Hillary Clinton good to distance herself from the entire debacle with the MoveOn.org ad in the New York Times. To support rhetoric and a bitter accusation against a serving military officer effectively ensures the Hillary has put herself clearly in the extreme left camp, a move that will not sit well with traditional middle-of-the-road Democrats.

Either The New York Times is so desperate for ads these days that it's offering fire-sale prices, or it has thrown in with one of the most rabid left-wing outfits in the county.

The facts are clear and simple:

The going rate for a full-page ad for an advocacy group is $181,000, the Times says.

MoveOn.org says it paid just $65,000 for such an ad earlier this week essentially calling the commander of U.S. troops in Iraq - four-star Gen. David Petraeus - a traitor.

The Times refuses to explain the discount, and some are eager to give the paper the benefit of the doubt.

Secrecy and giving benefit of the doubt - thank goodness - aren't what newspapers are supposed to be about.

Certainly, the rancid ad has backfired on MoveOn and blown up in the Gray Lady's face.

But it also causes far more serious problems for Hillary Rodham Clinton, who refuses to denounce it.

It could have been her Sister Souljah moment, that turning point in 1992 when Bill Clinton showed his moxie by pushing back in outrage at the activist rapper who suggested there be a week to "kill white people."

But instead of standing up to extremists in her party, Hillary echoed the ad's accusation that Petraeus was "cooking the books."

The winds of change seem to be blowing. Anti-war sentiment has been high. I really believe this is a major story. As Oliver North said, "There is a difference between criticizing policy and slandering a person. Seems to be an awe by liberals and conservatives both that the Clinton Camp is not backing down on this one. I always thought Hilliary was a lefty, good to see her come out of the closet. Great Story!

*giggles uncontrollably* LOL PEP Great headline Rightist / Iron Lady of America hires leftist robot, Hilarious great find, I saw it earlier and hoped someone else would flag it but not so. So I will :)

This is just crazy I hope it comes back to haunt her highness. I often wonder if given a choice between Hillary, Hitler or Goering, would Goering get elected? :) "satire"

I can see this going a long way with the likes of John Stewart or Steven Colbert.

In an interveiw earlier in the year in NY with some prominent journo's, after evryone had got at least two bottles of wine into them, they seemed to form a consensus that Hillary would lose this one for the Dems. I hope they were correct. She is dangerous and it's easy for me to laugh about this on the other side of the planet because I dont have to vote in the US elections.

If she is to be a candidate, and it looks likely I dont envy you at all, I would not want President Hillary on my consciense. I wonder, is there not any other families in the USA capable of producing Presidents? Surely the American people are starting to wonder if they live in some weird kind of Dualist Monarchy.

Petraus is a bit of a sap. Getting sucked into partisan politics like that, this is no place for a general, shame on Bush for putting him in this position. Flying to Iraq to "Shake his hand" before he came to APEC was very poor judgement. It made him look like a lacky of the Bush regime.

PEP, I like this story. It's good stuff.
