BREAKING STORY
DEVELOPING STORY: Russian news agencies cite the Kremlin as saying that President Vladimir Putin dissolved the government Wednesday.Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov asked the Kremlin to dissolve his government, Russian news agencies reported, with less than three months remaining before parliamentary elections.
Fradkov made the decision based on "the approaching major political events in the country and a desire to give the president full freedom in making decisions, including personnel," Fradkov was quoted by ITAR-Tass as saying. A Kremlin spokesman could not immediately comment on the report.

merrie, thanks for getting this story out so quickly. It will now show up on the home page for four hours. If new developments justify it, I'll renew this flag for another cycle.
This is wild! Is this like Canadian elections, where legislature is just no longer sitting or passing bills, or does this essentially put all the power into Putin's hands?

It's neither Rob. Its BS. If Vlad is disolving the Gov, it's as planned to give his sucessor a hand up in the elections comming up. Flagging an unvarified FOX stroy, LOL.

It's standard procedure for the Duma. Remeber it's a one Party system. Elections occur within the Party.
For Putin to run for a third term he would have to have a referendum to change the constitution. I hope he does, term linits are a bad thing and remove accountability.

This story had also hit the wire and other sources, such as the BBC when I flagged it. Just because that was their only source doesn't mean I didn't check to make sure it's been verified.

merrie, good stuff, and fast, too. Given the current flaps over Russian aircraft overflies, and other issues, having this political development out as news is important stuff, too.

merrie, you've convinced me you've done the work - it's authentic. I also think that you've been fair and thorough. I didn't get the sense that you were hiding your biases, or passing off other's work as your own. Or worse -- getting paid by those you cover -- so it's transparent and independent. I also think you deserve praise for being an eyewitness, and for your investigative efforts. Good stuff.
