Doctors battle to save Soeharto, Mahathir to visit his bedside
Mathathir Mohamad, the 82-year-old former prime minister of Malaysia whose time in office overlapped Soeharto's, was expected to visit the Jakarta hospital treating Suharto on Monday, Indonesian foreign ministry spokesman Kristiarto Legowo said.
A member of the medical team treating the 86-year-old former general said Soeharto, who ruled Indonesia for more than three decades, was still on a ventilator and his health had worsened on Sunday morning as fluid in his left lungs triggered organ failure.
"After we conducted bronchoscopy, we overcame that problem and his condition started to recover by noon and improve by night but it remains in crisis," Muhammad Munawar told Reuters.
"There is no major infection in his body, just a sign of possible infection. This is what we have been anticipating by giving him medicine," the doctor added.
Soeharto, who also suffered multiple organ failure on Friday and has since been on a ventilator, was visited by friend and contemporary Lee Kuan Yew at the weekend.
