Fred Thompson sez..."Federalism?"

Fred Dalton Thompson, Mr. Federalism, champion of the 10th Amendment ……….from his website, 7/27/07

“Perhaps the clearest example of federal over-involvement in state and local responsibilities is public education. It’s the classic case of how the federal government buys authority over state and local matters with tax-payer money and ends up squandering both the authority and the money while imposing additional burdens on states.” …

“The No Child Left Behind law itself increased federal funding by some 26 percent, while creating 50 new educational programs nationally, imposing almost 7 million hours and more than 140 million dollars in compliance time and costs.”

Ummm, only one small problem here. Fred Thompson voted for “No Child Left Behind.”

I guess you can say, Fred Thompson voted for “No Child Left Behind”, before he campaigned against it.

good stuff:

"No Child" was brilliant piece of bait-and-switch marketing: give something a heartstring-tugging name and people will vote for it, in many cases without apparently reading the details of the bill... that bill has played havoc with stuggling schools; perhaps "Catch 22" would have been a more accurate name, but, then again, nobody would have voted for it! What's interesting is seeing these little schisms forming in the Republican Party, which has traditionally been a well-oiled machine at election time.

Jordan says: "What's interesting is seeing these little schisms forming in the
Republican Party, which has traditionally been a well-oiled machine at
election time."

Well, as a charter member of the VRWC, and a blogging legend (formerly ranked #1 at Technorati), seeing these schisms develop is rather difficult to watch, and painful to participate in.

Having said that, I've never been one to back down from a good scrap.  The attacks originating from FDT's spporters have put me in touch with my inner redneck, and if they really want to take the gloves off, I plan on being right in the middle of it.

Everybody makes mistakes.  not everyone (like Huckabee) owns up to them.

Thompson regrets vote for No Child Left Behind

By Ed Tibbetts, October 03, 2007, Quad=City Times (Excerpt)

CLINTON, Iowa — "Republican presidential hopeful Fred Thompson, who has been critical of the No Child Left Behind education reform law, said Tuesday that his vote for it six years ago was an example of “hope” winning out over “experience.”

Thompson met with about 100 people at the Sweetheart Bakery in Clinton as part of a campaign swing through Iowa that began  Saturday and concludes today in Dubuque.

Thompson, who was in the U.S. Senate representing Tennessee when the education law was passed, said he liked it in the beginning, but it was watered down by the time it came to a vote.

“It didn’t look nearly as good. But I  went ahead and maybe in another case of a triumph of hope over experience, I voted for it,” he said.

He said the law has had “mixed results.”

“One of the negative parts of it is that states have now set these standards in a way that’s most likely to have everybody have high achievement to keep the federal money flowing.”

The education law, while lauded by President Bush and winning near unanimous approval from Congress in 2001, has been criticized by people in both political parties since then."

So, Fred admits that he's a flip-flopper.

How principled of him.
