General and state election in Pakistan before 9 January
Former prime minister Mian Nawaz Sharif has said that Gen. Pervez Musharraf’s press conference is a plan to facilitate victory of the King’s party in general elections.
Talking to Geo News, Sharif called all political parties to get
united to thwart the conspiracy against democracy. He said restoration
of democracy through the path of emergency is illogical. “Emergency
impedes, not restores democracy,” he said.
Elections for National Assembly and provincial assemblies would be held on one day simultaneously addressing a press conference here president General Pervez Musharaff directed the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of Pakistan to fix any date before the 9 January 2008. Musharraf on Sunday announced to hold the general elections in the first week of January 2008. Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) should arrange to hold the general elections as soon as possible, fast as possible before the beginning of month of Muharram, he said.Musharraf announced that he would take oath as the civilian president on the same day on which the Supreme Court gives the decision about
his case, and he is likely to shed his uniform thereafter.
National Assembly will stand dissolved on 15 November with the completion of its tenure first time in the history of Pakistan and the federal caretaker government would be formed. Three provincial assemblies, Sindh Assembly, Punjab Assembly and Balochistan Assembly,would stand dissolved on 20 November 2007.
Musharraf defended his decision to impose emergency rule, insisting he had done nothing wrong.Speaking at press media in Islamabad General said he is waiting for Supreme court to validate his 6 th October presidential election he won.
Attorney General Malik Muhammad Qayyum said the state of emergency “is likely to be lifted in a month." His comments came as the US added pressure on President General Pervez Musharraf to end the emergencyand set a firm date for legislative.
US President George W. Bush has praised Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf as a strong ally against terrorism and said he had no reason to doubt his pledges to return to democratic rule.

He said when state of emergency has been proclaimed in the country
and politicians and thousands political workers are detained, media and
civil society have been strangulated, in such situation talking about
free and fair election will be a fraud.
