History Repeats Itself: Muslims Being Profiled

Sixty five years ago in the State of California Americans facilitated the largest modern day racial profiling program against Japanese American Citizens.  In that as it may be, history has a knack of repeating itself. The Los Angeles Police Deptpartment's counterterrorism bureau plans to racially profile Muslims.  According to AP reports, LAPD Deputy Chief Michael P. Downing stated "We want to know where the Pakistanis, Iranians and Chechens are so we can reach out to those communities."

"History never looks like history when you are living through it.  It
always looks confusing and messy, and it always feels uncomfortable."  John W. Gardner

Words of wisdom and oh so applicable to our times.

The LAPD's counterterrorism bureau plans to identify Muslim enclaves in order to determine which might be likely to become isolated and susceptible to "violent, ideologically based extremism," said Deputy Chief Michael P. Downing on Thursday.

"We want to know where the Pakistanis, Iranians and Chechens are so we can reach out to those communities," said Downing, who heads the counterterrorism bureau.

Downing said the plan is still in its early stages, but the LAPD wants to work with a Muslim partner and intends to have the data assembled by the University of Southern California's Center for Risk and Economic Analysis.

You bet we want to know who they are, where they are, and what they are doing.  This doesn't mean they are to be herded into camps, but when one religion, which is also a political movement that wants to impose Sharia on the rest of us, is responsible for 99.9% of murderous terrorist attacks around the world, they must be monitored.

Why is there a picture of an Atomic Bombing on this alleged "story?" Islamic radicalism is a clear and present danger here, and in every nation across the world, among a certain population of Muslims. To compare that to the interment of Japanese Americans, circa WWII, who did not support war, violence, or anti-US actions, is a complete fabrication, in relation to the reality of today's current worldwide Muslim Jihad.

Does the commentary with this place it into the Opinions category? Good question for the staff.

I concur with the comment on the use of the atomic bomb photo--inappropriate, has nothing to do with the story. But I'd also like to point out that the blanket statement of Japanese Americans not supporting war or violence isn't universally true. Many sons of the interred served in the U.S. military. It's not as though all Japanese Americans were pacificists.

And, using the logical, common sense approach that a Muslim male from, say, Iran,  would be more likely to take part in a jihadist action such as a bombing, isn't even close to the internment issue. The times are different, the context is different--and oh yes, there's a world of difference between having your name on a list--especially if you have a criminal or criminally-associated past--and being hauled off to a camp.

Another question: are the city's plans actually totally racial? Are all Muslims from  certain racial groups from the Middle East? No European-descended Muslims? No black Muslims? A black and an Iranian are not one and the same.

When police departments have files on gangs, is that racial profiling? Most gangs are heavily ethnic/racial. So, no, it's not racial "profiling," it's just plain accuracy and common sense.

Before playing the racial card, let alone the history card, best to make sure that all the pieces of the puzzle fit together, and are accurate, and accurately presented.

I just found this story from our own Barry Artiste, on a police rain on a Hell's Angels clubhouse.

Many, many Hell's Angels groups are totally, or heavily, white. So, is tracking them racial profiling? Nope.

The KKK is a white supremacy group. So, is tracking them racial profiling? Nope.

The old saying is true: "birds of a feather flock together." Muslims who aren't associating with radical Muslims, jihadists, or Islamofacists won't be flocking with those who are, any more than my neighbor, a white guy, is flocking with the Hell's Angels or the KKK.

I agree with your comment, but I took disblacks comments about Japanese-Americans exactly the opposite of the meaning you got.  I thought he meant that most of them did not support Japan.

Hi joellerose, fair comment. I actually re-read disblack's comments several times before writing my comment. We apparently got widely diverse meanings out of the same sentence.

The picture is related to the story.  Social unrest is an explosion waiting to happen.
