Naomi Campbell meets Chavez (updated)
Today, October 30, 2007 British top model Naomi Campbell held a meeting with Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez in Caracas. At her arrival in the Presidencial Palace - Miraflores-Campbell refused to comment on the Venezuelan politics and revolution; there is a heated debate on constitutional reform going on in Caracas now.
Naomi Campbell - who is a member of the NGO Nelson Mandela - explained her interest in Venezuelan children and clarified this was not her first trip to Caracas. After the encounter, it emerged Campbell was interested in the Venezuelan Human Rights policy on Children. Prior to her arrival in Caracas Campbell had visited Brazil where she expressed her disdain for American President George Bush.
Few months ago, Sean Penn and Kevin Spacey also met with Chavez. These encounters infuriated some members of local opposition and Cuban American actress Maria Conchita Alonso whose brother was accused of attempting to overthrow the Venezuelan government.
PS: On 31 October 2007, Naomi Campbell accompanied President Chavez in two official events in <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Caracas. At noon, they attended the foundation of a new housing project - Villa del Sol - for low-income inhabitants of an inadequate compound of packing containers; they had lived in such difficult condition for more than 20 years. In the Afternoon, Campbell briefly participated in a Women Conference at Caracas. President Chavez was also present. He informed Naomi Campbell had interviewed him for a magazine she is working in. After her most unexpected participation in both events and visiting a local children hospital, Campbell expressed her at astonishment at what she had seen in Venezuela. She was most impressed by the social policies implemented towards children. Furthermore, Campbell said the Nelson Mandela NGO would most like open a new office in Caracas.
