New unrest worries Chavez ahead of vote

Apparently the voices of descent against President Chavez' rush to socialism are much louder then previously anticipated. The movement started by the students grows stronger with each resistant measure taken by Chavez. If the people do not agree with the direction or the methods of change, will there be a place for compromise in the Chavez Plan?

The defection of Venezuela's former military chief coupled with massive protests that have turned violent have given President Hugo Chavez a potentially explosive mixture to worry about as he seeks to expand his power through constitutional changes.

But the rudderless political opposition has yet to demonstrate it can galvanize the unexpected upheaval into a united front capable of defeating a Dec. 2 referendum on proposed amendments.

University students have taken the lead in protests that have drawn tens of thousands - sidelining political parties discredited by several failed attempts to topple Chavez during his eight years in office.

urbano411, . Good stuff. Chavez must stress socialism because the goal he must not speak of is Castroism. He is a product of Fidel but until he consolidates power he will call his movement a socialist one. But his ultimate goal is to control every aspect of life in Venezuela. He knows that he will have to show his cards soon as Fidel had to, and that is the key to the future of Venezuela. All Venezuelans have to do is look to Cuba. That is their future. If people think it can not happen there they are late to the party because it is happening right now....

I'm concerned that politically-motivated violence will give Chavez the excuse to further militarize the police under the guise of "security".

Jordan Chavez needs no excuse. There is no Democracy in Venezuela anymore. Chavez is making plans to be what his mentor Fidel is. The problem is that Venezuela will not go without a fight. politically motivated violence will become a fight for freedom from Castroism. In my opinion many in Venezuela will resist Castroism. Without total power Chavez can not survive. He learned that from his mentor Fidel.

From what I see (I'm far from an expert on Venezuela!), Chavez is more likely to become a Mugabe than a Castro, jealously guarding whatever power he can maintain through force as the ideology behind his rule falls apart.

yes very possible but both outcomes may mean a violent future for Venezuela. Chavez has not had the luxury of indoctrination Fidal has had.
