People in the United States wonder why extremist militants in Pakistan are winning. What they should ask is why does President Musharraf have so little respect for civil society — and why does he essentially have the backing of American officials?

Yuo know why, Hamid, because what you call civil society is millions of illiterates that will otherwise take complete control of the country. If I were a Pakistani that wanted to live in the 21st century with a progressive future I'd rather live under Musharraf's tyranny than the tyranny of the ignorant masses that should have been enlightened a hundreda of years ago. It's not even funny that people who have little respect for democracy and western values run to the west to complain every time they fail to get their way.

Musharraf is in a very difficult position. The primary concern of the USA are Pakistan's nuclear weapons. Without Musharraf's "tyrany", I believe the Taliban would now be in possession of the nukes. This would create a situation in which the USA would have to go into Pakistan and do what ever is necessary. Pakistan does not want this, the USA does not want this. Besides, Pakistan likes the hundreds of millions of dollars we are paying them annually.
