Protestors Rally Outside Myanmar Embassy in Tel Aviv

As reported last week, ex-pats from Myanmar and other supporters have been protesting the worldwide in support of the 'Saffron Revolution'. And even though the public protests in Myanmar have been quelled, concern still surrounds the junta and their harsh reactions to the dissent.

Dozens of protesters gathered Monday at Myanmar's embassy in Tel Aviv to protest the recent crackdown on dissidents by the country's military government.

The protesters, most of them Myanmar nationals working in Israel, carried signs reading "Stop killing civilians" and "Demolish the military government in Burma," and called on the regime to free student leaders and political prisoners jailed for their part in demonstrations.

"We are against the military government," said protester Aungo Naing Win. "The junta," he said, "has arrested political prisoners, demonstrators, Buddhist monks...everybody."

The current focal point of concern is the whereabouts of the detained monks.

A new estimate by a well-connected dissident group has concluded that 138 people were killed and about 6,000 detained, including about 2,400 Buddhist monks, when the regime smashed the anti-government protests last week.
