NP Rank:
Quietly, over time, is lost your Canadian identity
On Friday November 09, 2007 Daphne Bramhman wrote
an article in the Vancouver Sun,
Lest we forget the stateless war brides
and their kids
in which she observed, in part, that:
For the past 60 years, Canadian war brides and
their children have believed that they were entitled to full citizenship. Brides
were told that when they embarked on ships chartered to bring them from Europe
to their new homes and new husbands, who had survived the carnage of the Second
World War.
However, the truth can be more miserable than
fiction.
I have heard in the past about Canadian born who
have moved 'south', across the Canadianj/USA to live in America, and after some
years learned that at some point in their lives their right to Canadian
residency and nationality had quietly slipped away. But that kind of
thing wasn't likely to happen to war brides! ..Was it?
I found that the Toronto Sun published a piece by
Peter Worthington on Tuesday, November 6. 2007,
"Ruling casts doubt on citizenship of thousands of
World War II children"
Worthington addresses the unsuccessful battle of a
life-time Canadian who appealed to the legal system in Canada to be recognized
as a Canadian.
The current Harper Conservative government was
supportive in the appellant losing his case.
From the Edmonton Sun newspaper, Licia Corbella
wrote on Saturday September 15, 2007 a piece about Canada's place in the world
according to the United Nations: Canada in dubious Company.
Corbella wrote:
Yesterday a 32-page United Nations report called Refugees: The Strange Hidden
World of the Stateless was released.Nestled in between the glossy pages outlining the nightmare lives of
stateless people in such troubled lands as Bangladesh, Syria, Iraq, Saudi
Arabia, Kazakhstan and Bangladesh is, wait for it ... Canada. That's right, Canada has the dubious distinction of being one of those states
that stripped its countrymen of citizenship because of bad legislation or, in
the case of many states, outright racism....

Nice to know I touched a nerve ... thanks.
I really believe that the Canadian conservative party led by Stephen Harper are collectively devoid of any basic understanding of the concept of social disenfanchiisment.
Therefore, supporting an agenda with long term humane benefits is not going to be on the government's political agenda in the near future ... and perhaps he is'nt the only politician with blinkered vision ...
