Europeans have very different views than Americans about the necessity or appropriateness of bringing up personal issues in the context of politics.  This cultural divide came to the surface in a recent 60 Minutes inteverview with France's new president.  The media gossip crowd will no doubt pin blame for this dispute on Sarkozy but sometimes the French get it right.  Does it really matter what is going on with someone's love life?  I know it's tough to compete with Entertainment Tonight for ratings but can't we just grow up a little?

NEW YORK - France's president abruptly ended a "60 Minutes" interview aimed at introducing him to U.S. audiences, dubbing it "stupid" and a "big mistake" and refusing to answer questions about his wife.

Before the CBS news show interview in Paris even began, Sarkozy called his press secretary "an imbecile" for arranging the session on a busy day.

"I don't have the time. I have a big job to do, I have a schedule," Sarkozy said through a translator before the interview began. In English, he added: "Very busy. Very busy."

In the interview conducted earlier this month and aired Sunday night, he candidly discussed what he likes about the U.S. But he grew frustrated when asked about his wife, Cecilia, who helped negotiate the release of five Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian doctor charged with infecting Libyan children with HIV and then failed to show up at a ceremony in which Sarkozy was given a medal by Bulgaria.

mtippett, Good stuff. I saw the interview and was pissed.

When sensationalism and ratings take over real reporting of political or other newsworthy meaty news stories, it reduces what was a decades old legacy and reduced what was a fine legendary show like 60 minutes into the ranks of Sleazy Maury Povich and "Twit for Brains" Barbara Walters style 'Let me see you cry" News of the World Tabloid Journalism period!

Love it.  I stopped watching 60 minutes when Andy Rooney went nuts and no one cared.

Agree, that France is moving up on my country-o-meter, but its still in negative numbers....
