Social networking met U.S. politics tonight when Facebook joined up as a sponsor of the ABC News 2008 Presidential Debate in Manchester, New Hampshire. Individuals were able to login to Facebook accounts and submit their opinions to potentially be read on the air, and were able to participate in live opinion polls. This election may be the first to so readily and easily involve average citizens and students in the media and election process, and it proves that social networking can create new opportunities for political outreach.
