Venezuela: 80 people detained and one dead (updated II)
On November 26, 2007, and according to Venezuelan Vice President Jorge Rodriguez , eighty people were detained during political protests at Carabobo and Aragua states, central Venezuela, this morning. They were protesting against the proposed constitutional reform. Sadly, one person died during the events: José Aníbal Oliveros was shot dead as he tried to surpass the blockage made by protestors. 19-year-old Oliveros was on his way to work early in the morning. He was a Chavista or pro governement Venezuelan. Late today, President Hugo Chavez confirmed his attacker has been identified. Chavez accused the rightist opposition of trying to provoke unrest before the Referendum. Venezuela will hold a Referendum on constitutional reform on 2 December 2007. More news to come.
PS: Detained people were taken to Attorney General Office. To this moment, it is still unclear under what charges they would remain under official custody or if iberated at all. In a late night message, Home Minister Pedro Carreño said four people were caught in relation to the death of Mr. Oliveros. A fith one is on the run though. Opposition students also staged protests in Caracas on Monday.
