The polls closed at 8pm for the special election in the District of Columbia.

Two City Council seats in Ward 4 and Ward 7, and one School Board seat were up for grabs. Voter turnout appears to be light, especially in precincts where only the School Board was in play. The fact that the Mayor has taken over the functions of the school board, reducing it to an advisory role, may also have affected voter turnout.

In Ward 4, 19 candidates vied for the Council seat occupied by now Mayor Adrian Fenty. In Ward 7 there were 17 candidates for the City Council seat, occupied by Vincent Gray, who is now the chair of the City Council. The District 2 School Board seat was vacated by Victor Reinoso, who was appointed by Adrian Fenty to be Deputy Mayor for Education.

9:45pm EDT update -- The election results are in:

Ward 4 City Council winner:  Muriel Bowser

Ward 7 City Council winner: Yvette Alexander

District II School Board winner: Sekou Biddle
