Polygamy acceptable? What is the UK coming to.... by Arleen Ouzounian

Conservative Home reported today that David Davies uncovered that the DWP (Department for Work and Pensions) recognises polygamous marriages that are conducted abroad.

The department states in a Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit guide that claimants in polygamous unions are entitled to "additional allowances for each additional partner". David Davies states that 'polygamy is both demeaning to women and alien to this country's culture.'

I know it seems glaringly obvious, but surely the DWP realises that bigamy (not even polygamy) is a criminal offence in this country under s57 of the Offences Against the Person Act 1861. Furthermore, polygamous marriages that are entered outside the UK, and where at least one partner was domiciled in the UK at the time, are void under s11 Matrimonial Causes Act 1973. Surely as a matter of public policy one would not recognise or promote (by giving fiscal advantages) an illegal act.

One thing immediately springs to mind, Labour have neglected monogamous marriages and yet they recognise and provide benefits for polygamous unions...Goes to show where the government's priorities lie!
