Portugal dropped captain Luis Figo for Saturday's World Cup third-place playoff against Germany.

Pride not glory. Two disappointed teams will fight it out for third place in Stuttgart today. Both Germany and Portugal miss their captains - Luis Figo is to be rested, and Michael Ballack has a knee injury. The Portuguese do have their villanous yet prodigious winger, Cristiano Ronaldo, who may look to make up for missing out on the Fifa young player of the tournament award with a twinkle-toed goal or two.

And it's Germany 3, Portugal 1.  It was Schweinsteiger, not Cristiano, who was the hero of the night - if such a thing existed.  He scored two spectacular goals and saw his freekick deflected into the net by beleagured Portuguese defender Armando Petit.
