Portugal and Mexico will square off on Wednesday with the sides vying for first place in the group, while the Mexicans need a point to ensure their spot in the last 16. They will again be without injured striker Jared Borgetti, who also missed the 0-0 draw with Angola, and Ricardo Lavolpe is expected to name an unchanged squad, although it is rumored that Francisco Fonseca could step in place of Guillermo Franco in attack.

Golden Goal reporting:

Another Monday starts and another week of World Cup action kicks off. The tournament is really heating up as teams are fighting for their the final spots and a shot at glory. However, there is much to be decided in this final set of

action before the knock out rounds begin.

Over the weekend,

Saturday: Portugal 2 - Iran 0

Czech Republic 0 - Ghana 2

Italy 1 - USA 1

Sunday: Japan 0 - Croatia 0

Brazil 2 - Australia 0

France 1 - South Korea 1

Monday: The first game on Monday witnessed Switzerland finishing strong with a 2- 0 win over Togo. Togo will be sent home, but they have played well and should be a bit disappointed, but also proud of their run at the World Cup this year. While the Swiss will be moving on to the next round with one game left to play...

The Ukrainians had had a tough time after losing their opening game by four goals, and the papers at home were not at all kind to this team, calling them all kinds of dis-heartening names. So it was not suprising that this team came out blazing, scoring four goals of their own, showing their critics a thing or two about football, and possibly securing a spot in the next round: Saudi Arabia 0 - Ukraine 4

It had appeared that Tunisia would be playing the role of the upset kid yesterday. However it was Spain who returned in the second half to play a complete game. Once they got the scoring ball rolling it was all over for Tunisia as the Spanish team was lead by El nino (Torres), and secured the number one spot in the next Round of 16: Spain 3 - Tunisia 1

Update:

Germany was filled to the brim with celebration last night.
The streets were alive with excitement, which provided a great
party atmosphere as Germany secured the number one spot for the
round of sixteen. It was a bit suprising that Ecuador did not really
show up after playing so well in the opening two games. But they will
be advancing as well, and they will need to put this game past them and
prepare for the elimination round where there is no recovery from a 3-0 loss...

England will also be advancing with Sweden in their group. England just needed to win or tie to advance as the number one team in this group, and they got their wish as they tied Sweden 2-2 in an exciting action packed game. Both teams will now advance to round of sixteen while their counter parts Trinidad and Paraguay will be heading home after solid performances. Paraguay beat Trinidad 2-1 in their final match...

Let the fun begin. Portugal/Mexico!

Having won their first two games Portugal has found themselves into the round of elimination, while Mexico sitting in an uncertain position. Mexico must play well today while they also await the final score of the other game of the day Angola/Iran. The Mexican faithful will surely be cheering on Iran as well as their own team today...

6th Minute

Goal!!! Goal!!!

Well it certainly did not take longer than a few minutes for Portugal to secure the lead in this match. Mexico was on the attack when they turned over the ball to Portugal who then reversed the flow on the pitch and this allowed Sabrosa to play the ball into the center where Maniche (18) was waiting to knock the ball into the net...

24th Minute

Goal!!! Goal!!!

Sabrosa (11) scores on the penalty kick. The Portugese striker was fouled right in the penalty area by the Mexican captain, Rafa Marquez. This was not a smart move as the Portugese player then lined up right in front of the goal with the referee's permission of course, and then he took a few quick steps before rifling the ball into the back of the net as Sanchez (mexico's keeper) had no shot at saving the goal.

Mexico takes a great shot on goal, but the keeper for Portugal, Ricardo, steals the certain score...

30th Minute

Goal!!! Goal!!!

Mexico earned a corner from their near goal a moment ago, and the kick is a spiraling beauty as Fonseca (17) heads the ball right into the corner of the net. Mexico really needed to score here and they came through...

The action is really heating up on the pitch as Mexico is turning up their energy level to try and equalize this game. Ricardo is down for Portugal and he is being attended to by the Portugese trainer's... He seems to be ok, and the game continues...

One Minute of extra time is given before the half... Mexico must tie or win to advance and they find themselves in need of an equalizer...

Half Time Score: Portugal 2 - Mexico 1

In other action Angola 0 - Iran 0. Angola still has a chance to make the final round of sixteen, but they will need to score...

The action has started again. Mexico is down a goal and they must battle back to try and advance themselves along with Portugal who is off to the round of sixteen...

Mexico is pushing the ball, but the Portugese midfield defense is making it a slow outing as they continue to deflect the attack...

Wow, Mexico has earned a penalty kick. With some nice passing right in front of the goal, Mexico was able to lure a Portugese defender into making a bad foul. Mexico gets a real chance to equalize this game...

Mexico's head coach, La Volpe wears his emotion on his face as the penalty kick went terribly wrong for team Mexico. Omar Bravo went high with his kick, but the ball sailed late and flew up over the top bar to end any hope of a equalizer on this kick from such a close distance...

Now Mexico is down to ten men as a second yellow card is handed out to Luis Perez. This is not good for Mexico as they certainly need all of their players, but they move on one down.

Omar Bravo for Mexico has another chance to score as he broke through the Portugese defense, but he cannot capitalize and misses a second chance to equalize the game...

Portugal is using their advantage of one extra player by passing the ball well and keeping the Mexican team at bay...

Mexico has earned a corner, but cannot do anything with the kick as Portugal takes the ball back down the pitch. For only having ten men, Mexico is doing a great job of attacking, but as of yet cannot get anything substantial going once they do reach the penalty area...

All three goals in this game were reached in the first half. Both teams are struggling right now to get something going. Portugal seems determined to ride their lead out for the rest of this match. But Mexico is still looking for an equalizer which would assure their trip to the round of sixteen...

Update: Angola 1 - Iran 0

Team Mexico must know by now that Angola has taken the lead on Iran, meaning they must score an equalizer. The pressure is on for this team from North America...

80th Minute

The Mexican fans are cheering their team on with great enthusiasm. They are not giving up, yet, and there is till time left... In fact a Mexican wave can be seen in the crowd. There is nothing like a wave to bring home a equalizer, and signal that the crowd supports a winning or a tying goal...

Update: Angola 1 - Iran 1

The score update does not bode well for Angola as they really need a win today...

Three minutes extra time is added to the match... Portugal can make it three out of three so far in the tournament with a win here today. Mexico is unable to win the ball back from Portugal as they pass the game away...

And that is the final whistle...

Final Score: Portugal 2 - Mexico 1

Mexico must now wait for the outcome of the Angola/Mexico match...

Mexico can now celebrate as Angola tied Iran 1-1, and this will send Mexico to the round of sixteen.
