GM takes the Chevy Volt to Los Angeles
The Chevy Volt concept car heads to Los Angeles today for its third stop on a four-city tour. In October, the Volt was shown in Boston and Miami. From Thursday, December 6 to Tuesday, December 11, the car will be shown at various locations in L.A. Passersby will have the opportunity to view the interior and exterior of the concept vehicle, as well as have their questions answered by street teamers and the occasional expert.
The Volt is a revolutionary electric vehicle that GM is planning on producing in 2010. Propelled only by an electric motor, the Volt is designed to drive 40 miles on one full battery charge. After 40 miles, a small gas combustion engine running a generator will kick in to recharge the battery continuously if the driver does not wish to stop and plug in the car.Since 78% of daily commuters drive 40 miles or less to and from work each day, the Volt should allow a significant number of drivers to simply plug the vehicle in at night and go completely gas free.
Currently, over 200 engineers and 25 interior and exterior designers have been assigned to work on the vehicle. GM is also working with A123 Systems and LG Chem to develop safer and more energy dense lithium ion batteries for the Volt.
If any Angelenos have time to come out and see the Volt, please comment and contribute to the story! We’d love to hear from everyone who’s seen it firsthand.

This is a great-looking car, though it will likely be "mainstreamed" quite a bit before entering production.

The Chevy Volt is due for production in 2009. It is a "series hybrid". It has a flex-fuel (ethanol/gasoline) internal combustion engine as a "range extender" which recharges the lithium battery pack when it runs low on charge. The internal combustion engine (ICE) never directly drives the wheels. It is simply a backup generator to charge the batteries. This is an electric car.
