korzac, I like this story. It's good stuff.

OK I can throw some light on this Korzac Russian military officials have consistently denied reports that Russia
is creating a permanent naval base in Tartus, Syria that would give it
a Mediterranean outpost and represent a major shift in the regional
security balance of the Eastern Mediterranean, the Levant, and the
Middle East as a whole. Reports were emerging long before the Israeli
attacks on Lebanon that Russia had begun work on deepening the Syrian
maritime port of Tartus, used by the Soviet Union and later Russia as a
supply point since the Cold War, and widening a channel in Latakia,
another Syrian port. Both Tartus and Latakia are significant for both
Syria and Russia in that they face the outlet of the Ceyhan end—the
receiving end—of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil terminal giving Russia and
its partners the ability to disrupt or secure the port and route during
the possibility of the eruption of any future war(s) with the United
States.

Given the Targets that have been shown in this map you posted, I can confirm two things.

1 It is highly unlikely that Israel fored anything. It sounds like they were fired upon during a spy mission and dropped things such as amo and drop tanks to get out fast. They know that Syria can shoot down their aircraft with those igla-8 missiles, Debka reports DEBKAfile's military experts conclude from the way Damascus described
the episode Wednesday, Sept. 6, that the Pantsyr-S1E missiles,
purchased from Russia to repel air assailants, failed to down the
Israeli jets accused of penetrating northern Syrian airspace from the
Mediterranean the night before. The new Pantsyr missiles therefore
leave Syrian and Iranian airspace vulnerable to hostile intrusion...So this is most likely a lie. It comes from Debka.

2 Iran & Syria Armed With Russian S-300 Missiles
During a visit to Ramallah in Palestine on April 29, 2005, President Putin commented: "Expecting Mahmoud Abbas to fight terrorism effectively, we have to realize that a slingshot and a handful of stones won't do the job." Then Putin paused, before adding, "Which Israel clearly understands."

So if Israel has infact struck on of these sites in Tartus, than Israel will be ash. Russia has been looking for an excuse to get Israel and this would be it.So if you believe this is tru, you can look forward to Tel-a-viv and esspecially Haifa becomeing 350 kilo tonne glowing holes in the ground.

In fact Haifa is the real Important place in Israel, and it can be substituted by Tripoli, so no big loss for the UK or the USA.

SthPacific, you have an apocaliptic view. The targets that have been shown on the map I posted, where for illustrative purpose.  I don't think the map reveils what truly goes on untill this very moment: 14 september 2007. On the speculative side your scenario is possible. But you know the drawers of every intelligence agency are full of possible scenarios, reality only disclose the right one.

korzac, great stuff.  I think its just this kind of situation that can lead to some serious Mid east trouble.

gryphon, thanks for the 'good stuff' flag.

I think that the the troubles are already here. It is only a question of timing and opportunity, perhaps based on wrong judgements, that one of the parties will make the next crucial move.
