Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women accounting for 26 per cent of female cancers. One in every eight women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, placing the lifetime risk at 13 per cent. More than 200,000 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in the United States in 2007 and upwards of 2 million women are currently breast cancer survivors. Five-year survival rates for breast cancer are 98 per cent for localized disease, 83 per cent for regionally spread and 26 per cent for distantly spread cancer.
