Two of Canada's recent prime ministers. On the left is John Diefenbaker, a Conservative who was PM from 1957-1963. He gave Canada the Canadian Bill of Rights, 1960; ensured First Nations the right to vote; opposed the stationing of nuclear weapons in Canada. More notoriously, he cancelled the Avro Arrow and fought hard against the adoption of Canada's current flag (adopted in 1965) in favour of the Red Ensign with the Union Jack in the fly.
On the right is Pierre Elliot Trudeau, a Liberal who was PM from 1968-1979, and from 1980-1984. Trudeau got 'the state out of the bedrooms of the nation', patriated the British North America Act and gave us the Charter of Rights and Freedoms in 1982, and was instrumental in the victory of the "Non" vote in the Quebec Referendum in 1980. He was unpopular with Quebec nationalists, and his energy policies made him unpopular in the West.
