The twin engine, turboprop BE90 plane was taking off from
McClellan-Palomar Airport at about 6 a.m. when it hit the electricity
tower, authorities said.
The crash also knocked out power to 1,700 homes and businesses
in Carlsbad and forced the closure of the airport throughout the
morning. Power was restored to most customers by 11 a.m., and airport
operations were back up and running at 10:30 a.m., officials said.
The crash sparked two fires: a brush fire started by the downed
power transmission lines and the flames that engulfed the plane, said
James Weigand, fire marshal with the Carlsbad Fire Department.
