Lancashire bucks the trend of the UK in closing down mental health hospitals and building private housing on the vacated grounds. They are building four brand new hospitals and they are asking the staff and patients what they need...

People in Lancashire are to be consulted on where to establish new mental health services.

The consultation process begins on 6 June for clinical staff at Lancashire Care NHS Trust and on 13 June for members of the public.

It follows plans to build four new mental health hospitals to replace 15 existing inpatient sites.

One will be sited in the east of the county, another in the centre and one each in Lancaster and Blackpool.

In the last three years there has been investment of more than £32m in Lancashire's new community mental health services.

'Exciting time'

Finlay Robertson, chief executive of Lancashire Care NHS Trust, said: "The coming months will prove to be an exciting time as we firm up plans for enhancing mental health services in the county.
