I can't believe the pubs have left it so late.

Businesses have been keeping planning officials in Hull and the East Riding busy as they apply for permission to build outdoor smoking areas.

Giant umbrellas, patio areas and smoking huts are being erected in a bid to provide somewhere legal for people to smoke after July 1.

Richard Purcell, development services manager for East Riding Council, said it had received about 30 applications so far, the same as in Hull.
