This is one of the best things I've heard coming from a religious party in a long time and I must say quite creative way to legalize pot...I have a lot of friends who seem to be part of the religion. I do live in Vancouver after all.

If some religions sip wine at the altar, others should be allowed to smoke pot. At least according to Rev. Edwin Pearson and Rev. Michel Ethier, two ordained ministers behind a proposed $25 million class action lawsuit challenging Canada's marijuana laws.

The ministers, along with lay preacher James Hoad, allege the federal government is violating the religious freedom of members of the Church of the Universe, which claims marijuana as a "sacrament."

In a statement of claim filed with the Federal Court of Canada, the trio accuses the government of harassing church members and "denuding" them of their dignity, often stopping them as they leave services seizing "sacramental cannabis" and rifling through parish records.

"The Church Abbott and all reverends of the Church are obliged to use cannabis for sacramental purposes in all its forms," said Ethier, who has been convicted six times of marijuana possession since 1998, in an affidavit filed with the court.

Aside from the interesting legal discussion surrounding the freedom to practice the philosophy of the Church of the Universe is interesting too, both in a lifestyle but on a higher level the definition of religion. The Wikipedia page described Church of the Universe as follows:

It is a new religious movement, or cult, which uses marijuana as a sacrament and promotes nudity as a demonstration of human equality. The guiding rules of the church are variations on the Golden Rule: 1. Do not hurt yourself. 2. Do not hurt anyone else. However, there are other greater and lesser aspects of their worship.

The question becomes what makes a religion. When you take everyday activities and say this  a religious activity does that really make it so? If I say that browsing the internet is my religion does that make it so? My instinct is no, but then the questions emerges...what is religion? Does it have to involve others? A community? A history? A prophecy? Not sure...

Ryan Nadel, Holy smoke you've convinced me I have been converted. Good stuff or should I say good puff.

Praise God! Marc Emery will be pleased - and find his higher power, I'm sure. Here's a link to his first-person stories about his legal woes: http://www.orato.com/cannabis/

Never could figure out how a plant that grows straight from a seed planted in the ground and then pops up like any other item of flora can be inherently evil. Ain't it one of Heaven's creatures, too?
