The head teacher of a secondary school forced to close by flash floods after torrential rain will not re-open until after the summer holidays.

Pupils were sent home from Prestatyn High School in Denbighshire at lunch time after water rose up the drains during the one-hour downpour.

Some residents used sandbags while the town's leisure centre was also shut but staff said they hoped to re-open later.

North Wales Fire Service said it took more than 20 flood-related phone calls.

Problems were reported along High Street and at Ffordd Penrhwylfa, where some homes were affected.

Phil Pierce, head teacher of Prestatyn High School, said four or five of the blocks had been flooded when there was an intense "tropical storm".

Flood water rose up, including through the sewers, meaning the affected blocks had to be sealed off to pupils and staff, he said.
