As a small business owner the value of a one on one experience cannot be overstated. Even as a consumer, when I have a positive, sincere interaction with a company representative, it will leave a lasting impression on me and I know that that company will be first on my list when I need the same product or service again.

One of the many ways of creating a lasting impression with your customer is to simply say "Thanks!" with a thank you note. Many executives make it a point of writing at least 10-15 personalized thank you notes a day to their customers. And this is very easy to do. Our personalized stationery company has been shipping quite a bunch of thank you note cards to customers recently. Here are some key points to remember when structuring a note to a customer:

1. Depending on the relationship, feel free to address the customer by his or her first name: "Dear Joe" or Dear Susan" unless a formal greeting is more appropriate. Perhaps, "Dear Dr. Adams" may be more appropriate if you are in pharmaceutical sales, for example.

2. Simply thank the customer. If you are a CPA and finished an annual audit, state that your company is pleased to have provided accounting services this year and thank the customer for choosing your company again.

The more specific you can be in this section will help build meaning and value to your thank you note. Sincerity of heart is of the utmost importance.

3. Sign your name and be sure to handwrite the note!
